Dalga – Dalga

The book Dalga – Dalga by Sofia Iordanidou is an important and multifaceted contribution to the literature on the Cyprus issue and journalistic studies.

In its pages, Dr. Yalcin Kuchuk, Attila's officer, details unknown aspects of the Turkish invasion: massacres of civilians, rapes, looting, etc. The personal testimonies of the Turkish officer show that Turkey remains exposed for war crimes.

The contradictory personality of the protagonist, as he actively participated in the political life of Turkey, leading, as an intellectual, in protests against the junta, allows us to decipher the political developments in Turkey. Mainly, from the 60s to the 80s. The way in which it integrates Cyprus into the developments of the neighboring country and the ambitions of the Turkish elite broadens our way of thinking, adding unknown but important variables. It thus facilitates the understanding of Ankara's motivations.

Dalga - Dalga is also a special contribution to journalism, as it is a revealing testimony - testimony of the soul of a Turkish officer, meeting all the requirements of high-quality journalism. The author's theoretical and professional experience contributed to this, and with her deep knowledge of the tragic events that marked the island, as well as her writing style, perfectly serves Yalcin Kuchuk's narrative.

Dimitris Psathas, the Pontian chronicler and the land of Cyprus

From February 1951, when Psathas visited Cyprus as an emissary of the newspaper Ta Nea, until his death, Cyprus occupied him incessantly. He never stopped repeating that the Cyprus issue was the most important national issue. For Psathas, the Cypriot issue represented the parallel history of the Pontus in several aspects. Two pieces of Hellenism that searched in vain for their national justification, without finding it, and which were both destroyed by party passions, personal ambitions and Turkish cruelty. 1974 was the reminder of the disaster he experienced as a child in Pontus, a disaster that shook him to the core. With his quirky humor and his uncompromising, militant journalism, he regularly commented on the Cyprus issue for twenty-five years. His articles covered all the major events of the period concerning the Cyprus issue, with him placing as primary the concepts of patriotism, dignity and resistance, which also characterize the entirety of his work.
