with Hambis Tsangaris

The beloved Cypriot engraver Hambis Tsangaris presents his new publications, entitled “Kalikatzaroi, Skalapountaroi tis Kyprou” . At the event, he will chat with journalist Dimitra Georgiou and open a dialogue with the audience, sharing stories and experiences about the art of engraving and the creation of his books. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the traditional Cypriot themes that inspire his work, explore the technique of engraving and discover the unique way in which contemporary art is connected to the cultural heritage of Cyprus. An event full of images, storytelling and creative interaction, which brings the audience closer to the magic of Cypriot engraving.

Engraver. He was born in 1947 in the village of Kontea, now occupied by the Turks, in the Famagusta district. He studied at the 1st Gymnasium of Famagusta (1960-1966). He was interested in art from an early age and organized his first solo exhibition in Famagusta in 1968. In 1971 he went to Athens, following an invitation from the famous Greek engraver A. Tassos, in whose workshop he took his first engraving lessons. In 1976 he went to Moscow where for a number of years (1976-1982) he studied at the State Art Institute "Surikov" where he studied graphic arts. He graduated from the "Surikov" with honors, while at the same time the secretariat of the Union of Soviet Painters purchased 19 of his works, of which 7 were intended for the "Pushkin" Museum of Fine Arts and the rest for other official collections in various cities of the former Soviet Union. After his graduation, in 1982, Hambis Tsangaris returned to Cyprus where he continues to live and work.

He organized solo exhibitions of his works in cities in Cyprus and in Moscow. He also took part in many group exhibitions in Cyprus, Greece, the United States, China, Australia, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, France, etc. Among others, he took part in the 9th Alexandria Biennale (1972), the Commonwealth Exhibition in Australia (1982), the 15th and 16th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts (1983 and 1985), the Mediterranean Artists Exhibition in Marseille (1985), etc.

His works are in state and private collections and museums in Russia, Greece, Cyprus, Czechoslovakia, England, Switzerland, Australia, etc.
