In the event “The Common Origins of Theodorakis – Hatzidakis” , musicologist Alkis Baltas unfolds the cultural roots of two of the most important Greek composers. Through detailed musical examples, he illuminates the common influences, traditional elements and special compositions that shaped their unique sound. The audience will have the opportunity to understand the connection between Greek musical tradition and contemporary creation, experiencing an experience that combines theory, analysis and live musical performance.


H.E. the Ambassador of Greece, Konstantinos Kollias, will address the audience.


 The event is held under the auspices and support of the Embassy of Greece in Cyprus.

BRIEF CV

Alkis Baltas was born in Thessaloniki in 1948. He studied music (violin and higher theory) at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki.

At the end of his musical studies in Thessaloniki, he collaborated with the Music Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, while he was a temporary member of the Thessaloniki State Orchestra (KOTH), director of various choirs in the city and collaborator of the Radio Station of Macedonia. He was one of the founding members of the "Week of Young Artists" that is still organized by the Thessaloniki State Orchestra ("International Music Days").

In 1970, his first work for orchestra was presented by the National Theatre of Greece under the direction of his teacher Solon Michaelides. During the same period, he wrote the music for several theatrical works presented by the National Theatre of Greece.

In 1974 he received his Law degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

He continued his musical studies at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, where he received a diploma in composition and orchestral conducting.

He returned to Greece in 1978 and worked at the State Conservatory and the Radio Station of Macedonia and the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki.

From 1983 to 1992 he was Artistic Director of the Thessaloniki State Orchestra.

From 1994 to 1997 he held the position of Artistic Director of the Greek National Opera.

During the period 1997-1999 he took over as Artistic Director of the ERT Musical Ensembles.

From 2001 to 2011 he served as Artistic Director of the Patmos Religious Festival "The Divine Revelation of Music"

Since 1990 he has been the Artistic Director of the "Music College" Conservatory in Thessaloniki.

From 2004 to 2009 he was the Artistic Director of the Corfu Municipality Symphony Orchestra.

Since May 2010 he has been the Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Corfu Philharmonic Society (Old)

From 2011 to 2017 he served as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra (CSO). Today he is Honorary Conductor of the CSO.

For a number of years he was Artistic Director of the "Hellenic Conservatory" in Athens and the "Contemporary Conservatory of Thessaloniki".

For 20 years he taught as a Special Scientist at the School of Musicology of the Department of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

A. Baltas is a member of the Union of Greek Composers. His works have been performed many times both in Greece and abroad. His compositions have been awarded both in Greece (Ministry of Culture and House of Letters and Arts competitions) and abroad (in two international competitions in 2004, in Spain and Italy). His works are released on more than 20 cds

As a conductor, he has conducted outside of Greece in Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, the Soviet Union, Turkey, the United States, Argentina, Qatar, Australia, and England.
