BRIEF CV

Pavlos Liasidis (1901–1985)

An important contemporary dialect poet, he was born in Lysi in Mesaoria and died a refugee in Larnaca. Self-taught, with origins in the rural world, he practiced various professions and began writing poems at an early age. His poetry, written in the Cypriot dialect, is inspired by intense social and political reflection, with the main themes of the pain of the homeland, refugeehood, injustice and hope.

From 1933 to 1979 he published 12 poetry collections, while also being involved in theater. Ideologically linked to the Left, he collaborated with unions and agricultural associations for the publication of his works. After the Turkish invasion of 1974, he lived in the refugee settlement of Tsiakkilero, with the vision of returning to Lysi accompanying him until the end of his life.

Pavlos Liasidis is considered a leading exponent of Cypriot dialectical poetry: a folk philosopher, erotic, satirical, with a deep social feeling and natural talent.
